Operation Arrakis: Secrets from Within the Woods - Part 1

By Alison Sky

It took all her energy to open her right eye. She couldn't open the left. It was caked shut with blood. The right eye hardly had any vision in it either, everything blurry and lost in the shadows of the room.

She hurt. By the Force did she hurt. This was worse than last time. At least then there had been bacta. But she didn't think there was a big batch of bacta hanging around in the middle of a German forest.

She tried to move, inch her way slowly to her rifle that lay only a few feet from her hand. She couldn't get her left hand to respond to her commands after the knife had plunged through it. Her right one though, worked to help her crawl along the floor. Inch by inch.

Then she heard noise from the room. Footsteps on the floor. They were a bit away, talking. She strained her ears to hear them.

"…ana naqal turs Hâji. NiHna Tarak?" [1]

"Aiwa. Qabl btiTla' ish-shams." [2]

"Shű bi-khuSűS…" [3]

"…dâr il-bâl 'ala." [4]

Her fingers just inches from her rifle, she looked up and saw Cim standing over her. Cim looked down at her hand just inches away from the rifle. He then turned to look at her face. With a sinister smile, he lifted his foot in front of her nose.

Then there was pain, and blackness.

Silent eyes watched the man drag the half-beaten woman deep into the forest. The man walked with a limp, a large rifle strapped to his back. Rain still fell from the passing storm, staining the grass red as the water drops washed some of the dried blood away from the injured woman's body.

The eyes followed them as they walked into an area dense with trees and brush. There, the man threw the woman against a tree, her body collapsing with hardly any resistance. The man then slid a hand through his hair, pushing it back from his face as his other hand grabbed the rifle.

Lightning crackled through the sky, and the white owl took off flying from its observation branch.

Crawler licked her lips. Water. She was outside, rain falling onto her face. She felt herself being dragged and then the impact of her body hitting the tree. Another rib gave way, but too many were already gone that it didn't matter much.

Slowly she opened her eye. Her head was resting on the cool grass, the water from the rainfall easing some of the sting on her slashed cheek. Moving her eye around, she noticed that she was in the middle of the forest. Cim stood a few feet away, pulled her rifle from around his shoulder. He studied the weapon, trying to figure out how to work the foreign object. Finally, he located the trigger and aimed the barrel of the weapon at Crawler.

"Majnűn kalb…"[5] he muttered as he lined up a shot.

Suddenly, there was a faint whistling sound in the air and an arrow embedded itself in the ground in front of Crawler's face. If she had enough control of her body, she probably would have jumped back in shock.

Another arrow followed quickly, hitting the ground by Cim's feet. Cim raised his rifle to the air, trying to find where the arrows had come from. A third arrow flew across the sky, ripping across Cim's arm and making him drop the rifle to the ground.

He held his arm in pain, blood seeping through the ripped fabric. He cursed and took off running in the direction of the factory, leaving behind Crawler to deal with the arrow wielder.

About a minute later, a pair of boots appeared in front of her face. They were soft leather, probably handmade and appeared to be very comfortable. Green leggings peeked out from over them, but the person stood too close for Crawler to be able to strain her eye any higher.

A gentle hand reached down to touch her slashed cheek that was exposed to the air, and suddenly Crawler felt very sleepy. Her head rolled over to the side just before she fell asleep, and she swore that the person standing before her looked familiar. Long white hair on a sleek male face, and were those tiny points of ears poking out from the locks? Probably another actor or something… she thought as she was lost to the darkness of unconsciousness once more.
