Operation Arrakis: Dance in the Dark

By Sylvana Lorrdain

"I'll be right back, don't get kidnapped or anything," Wes smirked as he stood.

Emily waved for him to go on ahead with a smirk of her own, "Just get outta here, already."

A few minutes later, someone put a drink down on the table before her. She glanced up to see a handsome young man, dressed completely in black. He wore dark glasses and a black cap over what looked to be a crop of messy chestnut hair.

"Thanks, I've already got something to drink."

He leaned forward, putting his hands on the table. A long braid fell over his shoulder to tap against her arm. "How about a dance then?"

"Why should I dance with you?"

"I'm famous."

"Good for you, so's the guy I'm with."

"I'm also younger, hotter, and have been watching you for a while, Babe. Lose the geriatric case and dance with me."

"My name's not 'Babe', but I'll forgive you this once. I don't dance with nameless men."

"I'm Llew Xamoud, lead singer for Alderaan'Deraan, and I would like very much to dance with you."

Emily looked up then, and blinked in surprise as she saw him lift a hand to pull down his sunglasses a bit so he could peer over them at her... with perfectly violet eyes. She stood, "Can I get an autographed music disc?"

He grinned and held his hand out to her, "Of course."

Wes returned to find the table empty, an extra drink sat before Emily's place. For a brief moment he panicked, his mind running through all the horrible things that might have happened while he scanned the room. Perhaps someone kidnapped her to get at him, or the Wookies came back and took her back with them to- "Whew," he sighed when he saw her dancing. Shaking his head at his stupidity in worrying over nothing, he slid into the booth to work at his own drink... and keep an eye out should anything untoward happen.

"He's military."

"You're delusional, Renniw."

"No, I think he's on to something, Iefuw. We all did a Term of Service, we should be able to pick out someone who's military," Yu'yo Reeh commented.

"Unless the skills are rusty," Iefuw Gnahc replied.

"I agree, he's military," Notrab Awort finally spoke up.

"I'm going to ask." Renniw Ertauq, the chordokeylo player for Alderaan'Deraan, stood from the table, and set down his glass. With a nod to his companions, the blonde pushed back his bangs and walked over to the table occupied by the man who, until recently, had been with the girl their friend was now dancing with.

There was a rustle of sound, and Wes looked up to see a blonde young man sitting across from him at table. "Sorry, I'm not that kinda guy."

Renniw blushed in response and looked down a moment to compose himself, then he looked back up at the older man as he squared his shoulders. "No, that's not why I'm here."

"Spit it out, kid." Wes's eyes twinkled though his tone was mirthless.

"Are you in the military?"

The Taanabian nearly spit his drink across the table and all over the young man. "Why do you want to know?"

As the blonde squirmed in his seat, glancing back at a table full of three other young men, Wes realised it was a member of Alderaan'Deraan he was speaking with. That, of course, was cause for much amusement.

"My friends and I were just, well, kind of wondering."

Wes raised an eyebrow.

"So... are you?"

"Yes. I'm a member of Rogue Squadron, in fact."

Renniw's eyes widened, a pilot from the most famous squadron in the New Republic! Then he grinned, "Really?"

"Yes, I am. And you're a member of Alderaan'Deraan."

"You mean you actually listen to us?" He could hardly believe it.

"Hey, I'm not THAT old," Wes shook his head and laughed. "Maybe you guys can do me a favour?"

"Sure!"

"Could I get a music disc autographed by the lot of you for my friend?"

"Can we get your autograph?"

Wes blinked, that was certainly something he didn't expect. Then he grinned, "It's a trade."

It was getting toward morning by the time Wes brought Emily back to where she and the other Terrans were staying; the sun would likely be rising in only a couple of hours. Emily hopped off the skyhopper and turned to see Wes still sitting astride it. "Well, thanks for showin' me Coruscant."

"Welcome. Oh, I forgot something."

Emily watched curiously as Wes pulled out a music disc autographed, in Aurebesh of course, by the entire Alderaan'Deraan band. She started chuckling as he handed it to her, "What's this?"

"I got it for ya, to make up for all the trouble and stuff."

She pulled a music disc, likewise signed by the entire band, from her jacket, and handed it to Wes. "I guess we're even, then. Not like I need TWO of them...."

Wes shook his head and threw his head back in laughter, "Figures. G'nite Emily."

"Good morning, you mean." She waved the disc he'd handed her at him, then disappeared back through the balcony window.

Wes pocketed the disc she'd given him, and shook his head as he sped off toward his own balcony, and a good morning's sleep.
