Operation Arrakis: AT-CG

By Sylvana Lorrdain, and Nick Coghlan

Sylvana ate a quick lunch, as she dropped off the dye for Arrek. She told him that the directions on the box were simple, and so he shouldn't have any trouble with it. With a quick sprint to her rooms, she swiftly dyed her locks (well, as swiftly as the boxes allowed, which was half an hour) and the annoying roots, a blue-black, before changing into her new uniform and going to look for the child. Before she left, she pocketed an otoscope on her way out, and then she was on her way.

She had a feeling this child, being as young as she was, would be in need of some medical checks. She had a feeling this child would need to be hidden, well, as best as the child could be. And so, the only way she could really find her, would be to track down the Major.

In a castle such as this, that should have been an impossible task - but for one thing. The Mendellian finesse for rumour running. She asked a few people a few questions, and was soon able to follow almost in his wake.

When she reached the rooms, she gently knocked on the door. An older woman answered, looking her over appraisingly. Apparently it had been a good idea to change into the Terra Group's day uniform, for she was allowed entrance before the woman even spoke.

"I take it you're one of the newer members of Terra Group?" the woman's eyes travelled down to Sylvana's nameplate, "Agent Doctor Lorrdain?"

"Yes, Ma'am," the younger woman smiled. "I had heard there was a newborn child in your care, and thought I might come by to see her?"

Iris chuckled, "She seems very popular today, the Major left not long ago."

Sylvana nodded, "I thought as much."

Iris led the younger woman to the place where a small girl-child was lying on a blanket upon the floor, kicking her legs energetically. Sylvana knelt down beside the child and tickled at her feet, at the same time checking her reflexes and playing. "Have you taken her to a doctor yet?"

Iris shook her head, "I was worried if I did they would find something strange. Miss Bush said her mother was suspected to be from the other galaxy, and Captain Henscheid took some blood to run DNA testings."

"That makes sense, then," Sylvana adjusted her seated place on the floor and began checking the child's hip joints for displaysia, and once satisfied they were firmly in the proper place, checked to be sure the collarbone hadn't been cracked in birth.

All the while she checked up on the child, Sylvana spoke softly to her, telling her how beautiful she was. Iris, used to the way doctors went about their duties, watched with a half smile the way this young-looking doctor handled things. She watched as the midnight hair'd woman drew out an otoscope and picked up the child to gently hold in one arm while she peered into her ears, and flashed light across her eyes.

The child, thinking this was all a game, reached out to bat at the device, and the woman chuckled as she pulled it away and set it back in her pocket.

Sylvana looked up to her then, "Ma'am, this little girl is in perfect health," she smiled. "I'm sure Captain Henscheid, since she was doing some DNA testing, also drew blood to check for other problems - so I suppose I'm done here."

Iris watched the way she cuddled the child to herself, and for the second time that day marvelled at how a member of Terra Group would enter with haunted eyes, then after a short time with the baby, their eyes lightened to a much less doleful appearance. "You don't have to leave just yet, if you don't want to, Doctor. The little one seems taken with you."

"More like I'm taken with her. Children are good medicine for the soul," she answered as she returned her attention to the baby, nuzzling her nose against the tiny one before her. "She's so precious. Aren't you, Kiddo?" she asked the baby.

She chuckled at the giggle of response she'd elicited from the child as she snuggled her.

Two nappy changes, and a bottle later, Sylvana took her leave while thanking Iris for allowing her to check on the baby, as well as play with her. She headed down toward the med-labs that Captain Nolan had shown her when she first arrived, and in one corner she saw an astromech droid chittering away happily.

"Hi there, little guy. What's your name?" she asked, while pulling out her datapad.

I AM HELIX - WHO ARE YOU?

She chuckled, "I'm-" she broke off at an excited chittering behind her preceded the excitable Fate into the room. She looked down at her datapad - thankful that the device showed distinction between the two droids.

~THERE YOU ARE! I KNEW YOU'D BE HERE!~

Sylvana laughed, "I'm sorry Fate, I didn't realise leaving you behind would be such a criminal offense."

Helix observed Sylvana, his photoreceptor running up and down as he took in her form. He twittered, SO, YOU'RE A DOCTOR? YOU MUST BE HERE FOR KRISTY'S INFORMATION.

"If that is Captain Henscheid, yes, I am."

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT.

"What?"

Fate twittered angrily at Helix, who whistled angrily back. Both went so quickly, that neither bothered transmitting to her datapad just what they were arguing about.

She sat back bemusedly as she watched the two droids 'battle' out whatever it was - and sighed in relief (ten minutes later) when it was apparent they seemed finally to reach to a decision. "Well?"

YOU MAY TAKE ME TO THE CAVE TO DELIVER THE INFORMATION. I WILL NOT GIVE IT TO YOURSELF.

~BUT YOU CAN TRUST HER - SHE'S DESTINED TO DELIVER THE INFORMATION!~

Sylvana couldn't help but laugh at that. "Why don't we just all head down to the cave together, then, hm?"

Both droids whistled begrudging affirmation.

"May I, at least, see the results - even if you won't give me all the details to completion?"

Helix whistled begrudgingly, and agreed to pass over the bare-bones for her perusal.

She looked over the information gathered, and sighed. It didn't seem they'd gotten very far. The results she was allowed to view, spoke that the child was half of Galactic blood, Adumari in nature, the other half was most certainly of a Terran nature - how such a union had come to be, was beyond her knowledge. However, she knew that Captain Henscheid would be wanting the results as soon as possible.

Sylvana, and the two droids, headed down to the Bat-Cave in search of one who could relay the message appropriately. They found him sitting at a console.

Dressed almost entirely in black, the tall-looking man's appearance was foreboding at the least. The way Helix eagerly went to him told her that he was, indeed, a member of Terra Group authorised for the entirety of resulting files.

As Helix preceded them, Sylvana whispered to Fate, "Who's that?"

~LIEUTENANT NICK COGHLAN.~

She nodded to herself and quickened her pace that she might arrive to him the same time as Helix. She flicked her long midnight braid over her shoulder to lay down her back and saluted as he turned to regard her.

Nick looked sternly at her. "You have something for me, Agent Doctor Lorrdain?"

"Yes sir, I brought Helix here so his DNA testing results could be transmitted to Captain Henscheid."

"I see. And the droid did not transmit these files directly, because. . ." Nick let the sentence trail off, turning it into a question.

Sylvana gulped. The lieutenant's stern demeanour was making her uncomfortable.

"Umm, well, the droid said that it needed to find someone to transmit the files. I don't have the necessary authorisation to contact the team in the field."

"And so you started wandering at random, hoping to run into a Terra Group officer with the right authorisation?"

"No sir. I understood you were still on communications support, and so I came directly here." Sylvana hoped she didn't seem as nervous as she felt. The way Nick was reacting was making here wonder if she had done something wrong in bringing the droids down.

Then Nick smiled. "Relax Sylvana, I'm not going to bite you. You did the right thing."

"Oh. Thank you, sir."

The smile turned into a grin. "That's about enough of that. I don't think there's any need to be quite so formal."

"Yes sir. Uhm, I mean," she put a hand up behind her head and laughed nervously.

"That's more like it - let's see what we've got?"

He waved the droid over while Sylvana stood by silently. Helix jacked into the console where Nick was working, and downloaded all the information into a single file. While he was doing so, he asked - "Was there anything else you wanted?"

"No sir-, er, I mean, Uhm."

He shook his head, "Go on, get outta here before the Ewoks get hungry."

"Ewoks!" she exclaimed. "That reminds me - You're a member of Terra Group, which means you should know - and if you know, then I can find out - and then the dreams won't be stoneset - which means - and that would be wonderful!"

Nick arched an eyebrow. "Stoneset dreams being such a common problem, after all."

She took a deep breath, her laserscalpel somehow finding its way from her braid into her hands as she twisted it half-nervously. "Captain Crispy, is he really alive?"

He chuckled, "'Captain Crispy'?"

"Uh, I mean, uhm, Nolan."

He shook his head, "Ah yes, that's right. You're the alien girl."

She blanched, "A.. alien girl?"

"Squeaky ones," he eyed her speculatively.

"Oh! Those," she laughed nervously. "Yes, that was me."

"I see you've lost the blue hair. Anyhow, yes, Crispy's alive."

She could hardly keep from bouncing, "Do you know about Lieutenant Corletti? What about him?"

"He's not dead, either."

She could hardly contain herself, and so with a spin, and a laugh, and an exclamation of, "They're not stoneset!" she hugged Nick and kissed his cheek before dancing away out of the bat-cave. The droid that was not Helix whistled excitedly and zooped after her.

"Well, THAT one is definitely a few Ewoks short of a tribe. No wonder Josh likes her." His gaze slid sideways as Helix tootled in agreement. "Like you're in a position to comment, Mr 'I refuse to talk to the Palace computer for no good reason'." Nick shook his head and went about composing a message to send the data to Kristy. Oh well, at least it meant Helix and Sylvana fit right in to Terra Group.
